Easy Coppa is a plugin for the Unity Engine.

Mobile gaming is a big portion of the Videogame industry, and to be able to take part into this branch of game development we need to be ready to comply with the laws and regulation to safely offer our products.

One of this regulations is COPPA, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act enforced in the USA by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). This regulation imposes certain requirements on service providers and their products directed to children under 13 years of age. It basically says that service providers should not track user behavior or advertise directly to children in products that might not be suited for children under 13 years of age. (For more information regarding COPPA you can refer to this link.)

In order to make it easier to developers to comply with COPPA in a quick and easy way, we have decided to create this Unity plugin to save you time to implement an age check so you can focus in what you really want, making great games!

Easy Coppa has been designed to be used in mobile platforms but it should be able to run in most platforms.

Features:

  • Easy setup and use
  • Easy UI customization
  • Easy localization
  • Handles Terms of Use and Privacy Policy web visualization
  • Underage users rejection
    • If your game is not suited for minors but might attract their attention you can configure the dialog to reject their use of your game. Otherwise you can use the age input to decide to limit certain functionality of your project to different ages.

Easy Coppa is compatible with Unity 2017.4.2f2 and onwards. Easy Coppa will aid you in creating an age gate for your project but it is still your responsability to manage how your project handles user information.

If a game or software isn't designed for children, but children do indeed choose to play your game; does this project cover such a scenario?

Case in point: Minecraft wasn't specifically initially designed to be for children. The art style was due to artistic and programming engine limitations. One may consider that a checkbox for 'are you over 18' is not good enough, however, a number of adult users might not wish to subscribe to anything that may track them if credit card or phone number is required.

Hi, thank you for your comment.

We cannot give you legal advise, so please do not take this reply as such.

What platforms like Google or Apple advise is that, even if your game is not aimed at children, you should set up a validation for cases where children might still be inclined to interact with your game.

What Easy Coppa does is that is gives you a mechanism where you can show a dialog to explicitly state the player's age so you can decide how to react to it.

In many cases, mostly in EU, it is considered that a single checkbox is not enough to be considered a conscious player input, even less if it is checked by default. An input field, be it text input or age dropdown, as it is the case in Easy Coppa, is usually preferred.

I hope this answer helps you. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.
